The gardens were named after famed Sevillian painter, Bartolomé Murillo, in 1918. Along the garden path, Paseo de Catalina de Ribera (named after the founder of the Hospital de las Cinco.

The Mayor of Seville Conde de Halcon convinced King Alfonso XIII in 1911 to give the city the area for a city garden. The city architect Juan Talavera y Heredia was chosen to design the gardens.
