Check out EasyNPC, a tool that can fix incompatibility between appearance overhauls and other plugins that affect NPCs. I ended up using Windsong Skyrim Character Overhaul and haven't looked back. WSCO doesn't make the same drastic changes but I find that it takes each race and manages to bring them in line with some semblance of reality. It attempts to create something realistic and true to ES lore, without erasing the art style and creating a dissonance.

WICO makes too many adjustments that overstep it's bounds, makes it a compatibility nightmare. But I'm completely sold on diversity, one of the best mods I've ever tried! Cathedral Human mer and Beastfolk is probably the most lore friendly overhaul that covers the most NPCs. {Bijin} is the most used one.

WSCO - Windsong Skyrim Character Overhaul [www.nexusmods.com] makes the characters in the game looks way better. You can use it with body mods or the vanilla bodies. It looks good either way as it uses it's own textures for the body.
